Halloweensie Contest
This year I’m participating in Susanna Hill’s Halloweensie contest. In a nutshell, participants write a 100-word-or-less Halloween-themed story using the words (or variations of) scare, slither, and treat. Since I’m working on a middle grade retelling of Alice in Wonderland, I thought I’d stay on topic and submit a Jabberwocky-inspired story. Good luck everyone!
The Jabberwocks of Halloween
Twas’ dark and dim on hallowe’en
among the maize-lined rows
where children cloaked as jabberwocks
were lost among the throes.
Beware the scarey-crow who guards the fields,
with eyes that glow and claws that catch.
Beware the caws that cry from crows
who peck at eyes and flesh.
For in the haunted maze
they’ll wander, lost for days
unless…
They trick the scarey-crow with treats
and jack-o-lantern jest
and dressed as jabberwocks run free
to slither through the night unseen
celebrating Halloween
among the spookily dressed.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
