50 Precious Words Contest

I’m excited to be participating in Vivian Kirkfield‘s #50PreciousWords Contest this year. Writing picture books is hard work. Seriously. In 500 words, picture books must do what novels do in 50,000. That’s why I took the challenge this year to write a story in 50 words or less.

I have a lot of other colleagues and critique partners who have participated in the contest in the past, which has been running since 2016. Some participant’s entries eventually turned into full manuscripts, and some of those manuscripts became published picture books.

Since the contest offers over 50 prizes for the top 50 entries, there is a lot of buzz. Not only because of the prizes though, participants, myself included, get excited! It’s creatively a fun challenge, and it’s a great reminder that when it comes to picture books, every word matters.

I’ll be sharing my entry here next week when it goes up on the contest page, so be sure to check back between March 2 and March 5.
